INTERVIEWS

Race notes:
Driving to the race (the morning of) it was raining................ really raining. A decision had to be made Friday morning whether to use the Sunday rain date or not.(Fri. morning the weather report was for 30% rain ending by early morning). There is also a drought on........unfortunately the promoters got caught with some bad luck...........hard, steady rain after midnight stopping just in time for the Beg. race.............. almost.

There were lots of smiles regardless as the Mid-Atlantic Super Series racers showed what they were made of.............. they loaded their bikes and headed out to race in the pouring rain not knowing if it would stop. Thank you all for being so dedicated!

Push it baby…push that extra 30 lb. You'll be sure to burn, and I'm not referring to the extra poundage from the Hershey Bar handed out to the entrants of the Hershey Race for Chocolate on May 18. It's the other thick and gooey chocolate Hershey dished up at the Race - MUD (Mothernature's (other) Utmost Delicacy).

Blue Marsh has nothing on Hershey…it was extra dark, extra rich, and extra heavy and you could feel the pounds piling on as you took more and more of it in. Logs and roots were a welcome sight. Any extra jump and bump that helped knock off a pound was a blessing. And you know how when there's chocolate in the house and you simply can't refuse a piece or two and you end up eating it all? If you maneuvered the singletrack with the same tactic (until it's FINISHED), you got through it with flying colors. Who could deny it was truly a challenge to make it through an off-camber section without sliding down the hill, or take the turn with your bike still upright and you didn't take the tree with you. It was slickery trickery on the trail, but mastery of bike handling 'til you came out.

And when there was too much of the who-can-refuse-delicacy, it turned against us. Everything slowed down and started to stop from the extra weight and sticky mess. You said you had gears at the start of the race? Single speed woulda been the best choice on this ride. And sometimes the delicacy gets so sticky that it takes everything with it - including the chain. Talk about too much to take.

But the chocoholics can't refuse the stuff…they suck it up and deal with the consequences. It just makes them better bike handlers, right? They endured and finished - a feat well won by everyone no matter where you placed on May 18. Those that truly found it weighty said I had enough and admitted to their addiction and asked to be forgiven. MUD turned into DNFs for a few.

Thanks to TEAM Harrisburg, the Mid-Atlantic Series, and Don Morrison for yet another memorable race. I'm sure looking forward to that first perfect-weather and dry trail race! Hershey certainly gave me an education in Mothernature's Utmost Delicacy - bring the plastic bags to cover everything for the trip home.

I'D LIKE TO START SOMETHING NEW FOR OUR NEXT RACE.....

The Race for Chocolate,
PA Super Series #3

by Jeremiah Bishop - TREK/VW

Saturday May 18th

Double time was indeed the theme for my double race weekend. I was scrambling to get everything together to race again just 22 hours after the Race for Chocolate had ended. Time racing this weekend: 5 ½ hours, sleeping: 6 ½ hours, driving: 11 hours, sleep Sunday night: 12 hours!

Due to heavy overnight rains, soft clay soil, and hundreds of passes by the day’s earlier sport and beginner racers, the Race for Chocolate became more like a race thru chocolate. Nick Wait (Team Devo/Balance Bar) grabbed the early lead of this abbreviated slog through the rooted and soaked 5-mile course. The 2001 Junior National Champion was showing he meant business setting a painful pace on lap one. Chris Eatough (Trek/VW) was dangling about 20 seconds back and chasing hard.

I managed to outmaneuver the “Boy Wonder” on some of the slick roots to take the helm for the second of the three-lap race. I settled into a more reasonable pace for a moment and swoosh! Nick comes by me attacking out of the saddle. I scurried to cover the move as we accelerated to what was definitely my top sustainable speed. Nick continued putting on the pressure for the remainder of the lap, somehow standing out of the saddle on many of the course’s barely rideable climbs.

Beginning the third lap I knew I was in for a tough last lap battle. Passing by the start/finish we could see a close race developing for 3rd as John MacInnis (Sobe/ Cannondale) put in a valiant chase effort and was closing in on Chris. At this point I knew I would have to implement all my resources to look for some advantage. I picked up the pace to warp factor 5 in hopes of cracking or at least eliciting a mistake from my opponent. My opportunity came when I realized I could ride a section of fast downhill faster than Nick could with his hard tail bike. I turned on the fuel and attacked the downhill as fast as I could (almost nailing a tree). I got a 6 second gap and went like hell putting in the most anaerobic effort I have done since cross Nationals! I managed to hold off my chaser to the finish where I congratulated him on an awesome effort.
