INTERVIEWS
Race notes: John MacInnis - Sobe/Headshok had some very bad luck that caused this highly talented racer to miss out on the fun after driving close to three hours each way....... John was running late and decided to start racing a little too early and was pulled over and ticketed. It cost him valuable time and money plus he just couldn't bridge the gap to catch the start of the pro/expert race. Jason Newcome - AMF Racing was the fastest SPORT rider overall and picked up $100 from our ever generous Joe Tierney and crew (Fell Mtn Challenge Promoters). Caitlyn Tuel - Shirk's Bikes won $50 as fastest SPORT women overall. Thank you Joe for rewarding these promising young racers. Chris Yanavich - AMF Racing (normally 1st Place BEG Senior II) had some bad luck with flats and even after running with his bike for almost a third of the course ended up 11th Place! |

FELL
MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE More racers than ever before turned out for the Fell Mountain Challenge in Carbondale, PA. The weather was beautiful and so was the single track. The course was a mountain biker's dream come true with a perfect mix of fast, technical, rocky sections complete with downhills, uphills and striking scenery. Joe Tierney and the Lackawanna Bicycle Club did a wonderful job promoting this 4th race of the mountainbikeRACER.com Mid-Atlantic Super Series. Generous prizes in the racer's raffle, great parking, electronic results by Millennium Sports, great staging and start area, well designed course with easy spectating, and an all around well run event was the order of the day. There was a conflicting race scheduled for the same day........ just a little 24 hour race in West Virginia where over 500 teams competed. This made for a few missing faces on the podium and on this fabulous race course. Joe doesn't want you to know too much about this place as it's about the sweetest single track this side of the West Indies. Jason Moore - Moore's/Reinhardt dominated the race with
friend Ryan DeWald - K2/Shirk's Bikes who competed in a road race yesterday
while Jason was fishing. Jason and Ryan picked off the fast starters methodically
and then went back and forth taking turns pulling....... then Jason put
the hammer down at the end crossing the line with a little over a minute
to spare. Les Leach - Guys Bicycles had an impressive win in the EXPERT Senior 19-26 field. He ran a smooth mechanical free race and brought home 50 more points for Guys Bicycles. Les is a very strong racer and was third overall for the day. Wooden Wheels had another good day even though the majority of the team was at Snowshoe. Johnny Guentner placed second (he's still recovering after a bout with the flu) in the EXPERT Senior 27-34 class, Karen Minor took first place in SPORT Vet/Master Women and remains current series leader with teammate Lyn Shaffer coming in second. Andrew McDermott (see race notes) again dominated the SPORT Master 50+ crowd winning the race with five minutes to spare. We must mention here that our beloved Series creator Don Morrison - Wissahickon Cyclery had some bad luck flatting however still came in second place behind Andrew. Todd Forrest had an amazing performance placing fourth in the EXPERT Veteran Men 35-44 class ON A SINGLE SPEED! Mark (Fuzzy) Nickerson - the man behind A Leg Up For Kids Foundation rode a strong race placing fourth in the EXPERT Men Master 45+ field. Top ten performances were also in the Wooden Wheels mix with Craig Shaffer finishing up ninth in the highly competitive SPORT Veteran 35-44 field and Greg Morrison placing sixth in the SPORT Master 45+ class. Scott Henry - Team Harrisburg and Race for Chocolate promoter again showed that he is one of if not thee fastest 36 year old Expert in the country delivering another slam dunk with a whopping eight minute lead over second place Dave Henry - Team Harrisburg who himself was over seven minutes ahead of the number three rider. Karen Henry - Team Harrisburg (Dave's wife) won the Expert
Women Vet/Master 30+ race and mentioned a little secret that may give
a clue to the Henry's dominating performances......... Did you do anything
special (apart from the whole training lifestyle)

Adam Beattie - First State Velo Sport took first place in the Sport Junior class with a commanding lead of over three minutes. All the usual suspects seemed to fill the top spots in the Sport Category........ Jason Newcome - AMF Racing (fastest overall Sport racer (see race notes), James Kennedy (Sen. 19-26), Caitlyn Tuel-Shirk's Bikes, Esteban (Steve) Rodriguez - Sid's Bikes (NYC), Karl Faruzel - Chenango Point, and of course Karen Minor & Andrew McDermott of Wooden Wheels. Brian Gammaitoni - Cedar Bikes was the fastest Beginner overall and picked up a first place in Senior 19-26 with the second fastest overall Beginner time (just two seconds back) claimed by teammate Rob Wasch JUNIOR Beginner! Josh Nieratko was less than a minute back securing second place Senior 19-26. George Bressler - Bushey's Cyclery continued his winning ways claiming the first place title in Beginner Master 45-49 after intense training with his grandson........ an excerpt from his interview....."I started taking my grandson along on my training loop. He rides his minibike and pushes me harder, MUCH harder." Katherine Morgan-Fiser - Jersey Action Riders stood on top of the podium taking first place Beginner Junior Women. The challenging course was no problem for this tiny racer who's bike probably weighs close to half of her body weight. She beat more than a few older men......... way to go Katherine! Jeff Waldie moved into the current leader's position in the Beginner Veteran Men 35-44 class. After chasing him down for more than a half a mile at Guy's Racing Summer Classic (the last race he won) I was huffing and puffing, dropped my bike, ran through the woods and finally snapped his picture....... only to find that I had the lens cover on. This time I did manage to catch him in action. Fair Hill is coming up July 15th and we expect a huge crowd at this very popular race with super sweet, fast single track and great facilities. Super Series #6 - ESCAPE FROM GRANOGUE July 22 will be held in Montchanin, DE (10 minutes from Wilmington) on the beautiful DuPont estate which has rolling hills complete with a stone water tower overlooking the countryside. The course has been toned down to make it a bit easier. Craig Shaffer has worked countless hours and has improved the course making it much more fun. The Beginner's course will be challenging, the single track fun and you can bring the family as a kid's race will be included this year. See you all at Super Series #5 - FAIR HILL CLASSIC - JULY 15, 2001. |
