FAIR HILL CLASSIC

More racers than ever before turned out for the Fair Hill Classic - the Delaware Trail Spinner's "classic" mountainbike race just outside of Newark, DE. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the course(s) were extremely fast and hard packed. The top Pros were flying at 13.5 miles per hour. Todd Forrest (Race Director) did a wonderful job laying out the courses and chose just about all of the best that Fair Hill has to offer for the Pro/Expert/Sport loops. The Beginner Advanced and Beginner course were also just right according to the skill level of the racers.

There were 717 racers at Fair Hill which may be a record for a non-AMBC event in the region. There were 34 kids in the "kid's race" which was free. Proceeds from the race go to different parks and programs. The Delaware Trail Spinners are a nationally recognized nonprofit organization. If they did not exist there would not be any trails at Fair Hill. The Spinners maintain several trails in the area and donate to parks and organizations including Elk Neck State Park in Md and French Creek State Park in Pa. Thank you Delaware Trail Spinners for all of your hard work.

Ryan DeWald - K2 / Shirks Bikes was first place overall and the strongest rider of the day. After placing second in a fast paced 18 mile road race (crit) starting at 5pm Saturday night, he was still able to out sprint Jason Moore - Moores / Reinhardt in the last 300 meters today.

Katie Compton - TREK/VW East Coast Factory Team continued her winning ways by keeping her traditional steady pace and taking first place Pro/Expert Women overall. She stopped to help a fellow racer (on another team) lending him a Co2 cartridge and still managed to win with a comfortable seven minute 50 second margin. The racer she mentioned will most likely disqualify himself as he knows he shouldn't accept any help during the race.

Third place Jay Duffy - Speedgoat.com lead the entire race and at the very end didn't know that there was less than 100yds to go when Ryan and Jason sprinted by for first and second respectively. Coming into the "Five Bridges" trail Jay Duffy, Scott Henry, Ryan DeWald and Jason Moore were in the lead break away group. The usual suspects - Jed Schober, Mike Yozell - Guy's Bicycles, Erik Silva - Wissahickon Cyclery, Ed Bush - Guy's Bicycles and Les Leach - Guy's Bicycles were spread out slightly and chasing.

Jed Schober had a great race placing fourth after out sprinting the amazing Scott Henry - Team Harrisburg on the last fire road into the Fair Grounds. Jed fought his way to the front by pacing himself throughout the whole race without the benefit of seeing exactly where the four man breakaway group was while slowly gaining ground.

Scott Henry is 36 years old and held onto second place overall for almost the entire race. Close to the finish he got tangled up passing riders and lost a couple of places. Scott (much to the relief of fellow racers in the Expert Men Veteran 35-44 group) has decided to move up to "pro" for the rest of the series.

Kristine Oesterling - Team Harrisburg ran a strong race taking 1st Place EXPERT Women Senior 29under. She won by more than 11 minutes. Noreen Smith - Shirks Bikes / K2 won her second Super Series race in the Expert Women Vet/Master 30+ class. Karen Henry - Team Harrisburg took second with her consistent style clocking in at over 10 miles per hour for 23.3 miles. Lauri Webber - Wooden Wheels actually crashed hard on one of the wooden bridges on the Five Bridges trail tearing her cartilage by slamming her ribcage into the bridge and falling completely off the bridge. She had a hard time taking a deep breath from then on but toughed it out for a respectable third place.

Joey Thompson - Wooden Wheels did the impossible. In his very first Expert race he won the Junior Expert Men 12-18 by more than seven minutes!! The Junior Expert Men's current champion Chis Kuhl - Gettysburg Bicycle who chose to race the Michaux Series' Curse of Dark Hollow will have to deal with this "new kid on the block" at Granogue. Joey clocked in at a blazing 12mph for 23.3 miles.

Johnny Guentner - Wooden Wheels showed off his single speed skills again winning the Expert Men Senior II 27-34 class. It was a hotly contested battle with the top three riders within a little over one minute of each other. Dave Hawxhurst - TSV was second and Keith Goulet - Wooden Wheels was third.

Bart Passanante - Guy's Bicycles won 1st Place Expert Men Vet 35-44. Bart must have chased ladies and drank beer on Saturday as he claims in his racer profile that this is his preparation for an important race.

Bill Gentile - Lebanon Valley Velo showed that not only can he handle the highly technical courses but also the faster less technical ones. He now moves into the lead for series points with a convincing 1st Place in the Expert Men Master 45+.

New to Fair Hill this year was a 6 hour Endurance race with riders seeing how many laps they could to from 8am to 2pm. Andrew Wulfkuhle - Vicious Cycles took first place as the only rider to complete 10 laps. Andrew was first place Expert Men Senior I 19-26 at Hibernia and has now proven that he has endurance and speed. 2nd Place Brian Rooff , 3rd Place Michael Kreiser, and 4th Place David Averil all were within seconds of each other finishing up with 9 laps.

Jacqueline Eder won the womens endurance race completing six laps in six hours. Joanne Abruzzesi placed second and Cindy Weick third.

The Sport Womens races were dominated by First State Velo Sport of Delaware. First Place in the Senior Women 29under was Josie Shew traversing 19.6 miles at 10 mph beating series leader Caitlyn Tuel by almost six minutes.

1st Place Sport Women Vet/Master 30+ Lisa Vible - First State Velo Sport went back and forth throughout the race with Leanne Ksiazek - Alan's. Lisa (modest as always) claims that it's only because Leanne was recovering from an injury that she was able to beat her. The next three spots in this class belonged to Wooden Wheels with Lyn Shaffer on the podium with a third place (Lyn's hubby Craig built the podium), Karen Minor fourth, and Gwen Livingston fifth.

Adam Beattie - First State Velo Sport continued to dominate the Sport Junior Men class with a convincing lead of over 3 minutes. Keep your eye on this young man. Thanks goes out to his mom for helping call out race numbers as over 584 racers came across the finish line within 1 hour and 11 minutes.

Kevin Sullivan - Watchung Wheelman had his first 1st Place win in the Sport Senior I 19-29 class after placing second at Hibernia and Guy's Racing Summer Classic. First Place Sport Senior II 27-34 Norman Zellers - Kryptonite used his team name against superman series leader Jason Newcome - AMF Racing who came in second 46 seconds back. No easy feat as there were over 100 riders in this class.

Esteban Rodriguez - Sid's Bike's NYC was challenged all the way into the finish by our Super Series promoter of the Fell Mtn Challenge Joe Tierney - Lackawanna Bike Club. Joe and Esteban (Steve) traded places within the last mile with Esteban pushing into the finish ahead of Joe by a mere 20 seconds. Now that's Super Series racing at it's best.

Karl Faruzel - Chenango Point /Metalurges held onto his series lead as current champ of the Sport Men Master 45+ clocking in at 10.6 mph for 19.6 miles. Our hero Andrew McDermott - Wooden Wheels held on to his dominating lead in the Sport Master Men 50+ class with a very convincing six minute lead. Andrew was up at the crack of dawn after working the whole week in preparation for running the Endurance race that he directed which started at 8:00am. Andrew was still able to go 10.1 mph for 19.6 miles while multitasking.

My apologies for not getting enough Beginner or Sport pictures as with a non-lap race I just can't chase everyone down when they are racing at the same time.

Katherine Fiser - Jersey Action Riders showed that she is a consistent rider with a 1st Place in the Beginner Advanced Junior Women. Lori Fulmer - Team Harrisburg won 1st Place Senior Women 19-29 Beginner Advanced. Claire Hayes took 1st Place Beg. Adv. Vet/Master Women 30+ with Barbara Kaufmann - Guy's Bicycle a close second. Notable performances were given by Jeff Waldie - 1st Place Beg. Adv. Men Veteran 35-44 (Series leader) and Ken Fretz 1st Place Beg. Adv. Men Master 50+ (Series Leader).

After any corrections made by Millenium Sports as a result of protests, these results will become final this Friday, July 20, 2001.
Mid Atlantic SuperSeries points WILL be awarded.
The Expert Prizes have already been awarded, including five that were mailed to winners on Tuesday, July 17, 2001.
The remaining prizes - Beginner First Time, Beginner Advanced, amd Sport - will be given out to the winners at either of the next two races in the Mid-Atlantic SuperSeries: Wooden Wheels (Escape from Granogue), First State Velo Sport (Iron Hill Challenge).
