Delaware Trail Spinners
The Delaware
Trail Spinners with all the usual suspects -
Bill Bowen, Mrs. Bowen, Ken Robinson, Alan Turns, Todd Forrest,
Bob Cox, Pete Brakhage, Mark Nickerson, Kelly Keith, Ted McDaniel, Lisa
Myerberg & Volunteers from the Sierra Club did an excellent
job promoting the 1999 Iron Hill XC mountain bike race at the Iron Hill
Park - Newark, DE on Sunday. It was sunny with temperatures
in the mid-50s making it
a beautiful day for a mountain bike race. It had rained the day before
the race making the course very slick (wet clay and leaves in some areas}
and muddy.
Dave
Radziewicz -
Jamis ran what seemed to be a perfect race gapping the number two
rider in the Expert/Pro race by eight minutes. This is nothing new to
Dave. Last week he had a 16 minute gap on the number two finisher and
lapped all but one Sport rider missing him by just 3 minutes. Dave brought
the wrong tires to the Iron Hill race anticipating a little dryer conditions.
However he seemed to be flying around the course (like a Pro) with or
without the proper traction! Dave turned Pro in 1999 and is looking forward
to the 2000 racing season. Check out his interview.

Trail Maintenance at GRANOGUE SATURDAY
11/6
November 6, 1999
Granogue Estate
Craig Shaffer (chainsaw ace), Tyler Keith,
Paul Gassler and myself cleared a large tree from the singletrack near
the pond, raked leaves off the trail (and other debris), cut a second
tree higher up near the pond - then took 4 railroad ties (that Craig put
into the back of his truck by himself) into the woods to build bridges
for more singletrack.
We started off carrying them into the woods
with one person on each end. Tyler Keith who has a broken collarbone had
no problem with this. After the first two we thought it would be a good
idea to carry one railroad tie with 4 people. Next time we'll bring Terry
Blanch and put one on each of his shoulders.
Lastly we put two railroad ties over the
gully that starts the singletrack along the river after exiting the motocross
course. I'll put some treated lumber on top to complete a small bridge
to make for easy access. The weather was beautiful and we rode a lap after
all of that hard work. Keeping up with Paul was tough.
Next scheduled trail maintenance: Saturday
November 20
9:30 to 12:30- Ride at 12:45.
Call Bill Deputy 598-5371 or meet at the Pond at 9:30.

Elite Men
Monkey Hill Cyclo-cross UCI points to top 5
Sunday October 24, 1999
Wilmington, DE
Tobias Nestle, from Team
Focus in Germany, attacked early on the first lap. He would turn a
small advantage into a much larger advantage by carefully extracting 10-15
seconds on each lap to win first place prize, plus a nice Bulova Millenia
watch,
This immediately strung the group out.
Riders that tried to stay with him would pay the price later. By several
laps into the race, after Nestle had clearly separated himself from the
field, a group of 4 formed. Prenzlow from Colorado, Applegate
from New Jersey, Myerson from Mass., and Justin
Thompson from Avondale Pennsylvania. By just being there, with
this company, Justin
Thompson has proven that not only can he ride (and out ride)
some of the best Masters in the country, but that he is clearly a top
20-30 Senior rider in the US, all while being a Junior.
By 45 minutes into the race, Myerson fell
to the fatigue of having raced a hard Super Cup the day before. Applegate
was next, leaving Brent and Justin vying for 2nd and 3rd. Brent separated
himself from Justin for the win.
Hometown boy, Greg Ferguson,
fresh off his junket of local Wilmington media outlets, hauled in the
every-tiring Myerson. Myerson however held off Ferguson.
Ferguson however, was rewarded for his
excellent barrier technique (which ended up being the best bunny-hop)
in winning the inaugural Smart Fuel Barrier Competition, which was judged
by announcers Joe Saling and John Verheul.
The course, set-up by Dave Manhardt
and the First State Velo Sport Crew was met with rave reviews
by many racers. They thought it had an excellent mix of run-ups, easy
grass, slow-bog grass, up and downhills.

November 1,1999
by Marc Vettori
Overview
After Monkey Hill, The Wooden
Wheels team has moved up from 17th to 12th in the Mid Atlantic
Cup Cyclo-cross Series. The team was excited and pleased with outstanding
weather. The team brought 5 riders to Annondale, Va with hopes of making
the top ten in the team standings and improving upon what has been a strong
start to this 'cross season. The team was happy to have both Tim and
Ted McDaniel Jr. back
in the line up. If Monkey Hill was the hardest cross course I ever raced
on, this was the funnest course.
A Race
This race was a battle between 3 top dogs.
Will Frishkon (Mercury), who was 5th in the JR. worlds last year, Chris
Hour (Galaxy), and Gunnar Shogren (Diamond Back). Early on Frishkorn,
Hour and Shogren set a blistering pace. Frishkorn, riding a road bike,
broke away from the group and was super smooth through the barriers on
his way to the win. Hour was able to recover from a wheel change and over
come fan favorite Gunnar Shogren to take second. Phil Riggio finished
up in 4th.
Women's Race
The first lap the racers where
still very packed together, with 8 of the 10 starters still riding together.
As the second lap began, a break became clear. The top three riders were
Jen Shogren, a nice woman on a Kona, and Julie Larson. From Wooden Wheels,
Diane Vettori, and Jeanie
Rengers battled with Fuji rider Tracy Lea. Diane and Jeanie's team
tactics proved to be too much for Tracy Lea. In the second to last lap,
Jeanie protected Diane and helped pull her up to Tracy Lea. On the final
climb of the final lap, Diane attacked the climb and was able to out sprint
Tracy Lea. Diane finished 5th , while Jeanie finished up 7th. Jeanie was
proud of her teamwork, but frustrated battling her medical condition through
out the early part of this season. Diane and Jeanie continue to work together
and climb in the Mid Atlantic Rankings.
B men
This field continues to be the
deepest class week in and out. With series leader Mike Dovin (Shirk's);
Scott Gibbon's (cross legend); and junior ace Nick Atkins (Sobe Head Shock)
all present the race promised to be competitive. 35 riders lines up. Atkins
and Gibbons set a furious pace at the beginning of the race. Two laps
in they had broken free from the main group. The main group had 2 Whole
Wheel racing riders, Mike Dovin, Chip______ (Lateral Stress), and me.
In the end Nick Atkins made a strong last lap move to win the race 3 seconds
a head of Gibbons. I was able to hang on to third in a close finish with
Chip and Mike Dovin taking 4th and 5th respectively. Wooden Wheels
rider Tim McDaniel battled a tough field to finish 13th.
C Race
Ted McDaniels mounted an outstanding
attack building a early lead on the first lap. Unfortunately, Ted may
have over extended himself as he faded slightly mid way through the race.
He finished up 5th. Mike Brevoort, long time Wooden Wheels family member
, and personal confidant, raced his first cross race. Mike was suffering
at some points , but had fun finishing just outside of the top 12.

| NEWS FLASH: Lyn
Shaffer - Wooden Wheels
was a few seconds away from first place competing in the Sport Women
Class when she fell, hitting a log off the side of the trail and broke FOUR
RIBS! She would have finished the race except she couldn't get her derailleur
to shift as it had all kinds of wood splinters jamming it up. She went to
work today (she trains race horses) and cleaned out a couple of stalls with
a pitch fork, brushed a couple of horses down, then figured she may have
a serious problem when she couldn't handle full buckets of water. Ribs 6
thru 9 on the right side were broken with number 9 broken all the way through.
E-mail her to cheer her up! |
