Craig Shaffer and Bill Deputy built two bridges,
dug out trails, put down palettes, cleaned up trails and had a very productive
day doing Granogue trail maintenance.
Craig was especially productive in that he
was good at planning how to build the bridges, stack the rocks and cut the
right kind of lumber (white oak) to cross one of the creeks (besides the
two bridges) while still letting the water flow through.
His relentless energy all day from 9:15 until
dark was amazing. Many thanks! |

It used to be exciting for
Justin Thompson
to have his picture plastered all over this web site. He even had time
to send in race reports on a regular basis. Now he is traveling all over
the country and racing EVERY weekend as he has for almost a year! If you
want to see his picture now you have to go to page 59 of VELO NEWS November
22, 1999. He still finds the time to send us a race report once in a while.
Justin is a good-natured young man with
a great head on his shoulders and an inspiration to bicycle racers young
and old. He is very disciplined and focused and has done nothing but improve
at bicycle racing since he started in '97.
From Team Wooden Wheels, Trek East Coast Factory Team and now Rock Shox / DEVO Justin has grown from a "kid
racer" to a fire breathing mountain bike, cyclo-cross and road racing
monster.
Where he is headed is anyone's guess -
however there hasn't been much guess work involved in where he is headed
before anyone else - the finish line. His iron will to win was shown in
his last SUPER CUP cylo-cross race. Even after a flat tire he was able
to come back and pick up the lead taking the number one spot as usual
"JUST-IN Time".
We at mountainbikeracer.com are betting
that Justin will be at the Cylo- Cross Worlds.

Chicago Super Cup
Race Report
by Justin Thompson
November 14, 1999
Just wanted to try to keep everyone informed
on what was going on. I just got home today from Chicago and I'll be leaving
later this week for Seattle. The course was a flat fast course. Total
elevation gain per lap was 11 feet! There were a couple tricky sections
that kept the roadies honest like some tricky turns, a long mulch section
and a double set of three barriers.
The race took place in Washington Park
which is in the ghetto of Chicago. The Junior race started out fast and
I quickly surged to the front to set the pace early. Half way through
the second lap Dameion Donais and I had a good sized gap on the rest of
the field when I suffered a flat rear tire along with fellow DEVO teammate
Jeremy Powers. Unfortunately I was about three minutes from the pit and
by the time I took a new bike from the pit I was almost 40 seconds down
from an attacking Donais. After two laps I had passed Craig Lipka and
Toby Swanson who passed me and I continued to chase Donais who was now
less than 20 seconds up and in sight! With a little over one lap to go
I reeled the Redline junior in and tried to sit in for a little while
and recover. With half a lap to go in the race I continually attacked
Donais and on the last flat straight a way before the pit my attack stuck
and I was able to gap him. After almost falling on the first of six barriers
I crossed the finish line to take the win.
Results
1st, Justin Thompson (Devo)
2nd, Dameion Donais (Redline)
3rd, Craig Lipka (NCC)
4th, Toby Swanson
5th, Jeremy Powers (Devo)
Later in the day I decided to do the Elite
Mens race for the first time at a SuperCup. I got called up to the line
with names like, Marc Gullickson, Bart Bowen, Steve Larsen which was totally
an awesome experience. Because the legs weren't totally fresh I started
out kinda slow and as the race formed I was in the 2nd group with names
like Greg Ferguson, Bill Elliston, Mike Yozell, Eric Tonkin and Brent
Prenzlow. The size of the group was about six riders after Yozell fell
off and Prenzlow broke away from the group. I ended up finishing with
that group right behind Greg Ferguson to take 20th place.

Ted McDaniel Jr.-Wooden Wheels took his second win Sunday at Snow Valley
in the B Race. After racing in New Jersey the day before, he crushed the
field in the 35 minute plus 2 lap race.
He pulled away about 3/4s into the first
lap in a tough, sandy section and never looked back. Then he raced in
the A Race with the Experts and came in 5th! Check out his interview!

Bill Deputy on Justin:
In the summer of '98 Tyler
Keith and I took Justin to Jim Thorpe, PA with us for a 5 1/2 hour
grueling endurance ride. He was just becoming very fast but was not known
for his endurance.
We had been practicing the Jim Thorpe loop
which consisted of 50 miles of mostly singletrack and ended with a monster
road climb ((1.8) mile steep incline) that we would race up at the end
of the day. (We did break for lunch). After several trips up to Jim Thorpe
getting comfortable with the trails and building up our endurance - we
thought it would be a good idea to invite Justin - and teach him a lesson
in endurance.
He stayed with us the whole ride until very
close to the end of the ride. He dropped off a little on the "Deer
Trail" while trying to traverse a rock garden after dabbing the first
time and Tyler and I waited for him to get himself together. (The wait
was no more than 30 seconds).
We looked at each other and thought he
finally had a crack in his armor. We went on thinking of how we could
really show off our strength on the final road climb and Justin would
probably be at least 100 yards back.
Down the very technical singletrack to the
bottom of the mountain we went. Justin not far back at all. We looked
at each other and wondered when he would ask us to slow down.
Out of the woods we came and onto the road.
To our amazement Justin casually rode by us and flew up the 1.8 mile incline
and dropped us hard. He went out of sight. He was waiting for us when
we got to the top - smiling and thanking us for bringing him along.

Terry
Blanch on Justin:
In April '98 when we did the Wilmington
Training Series (Dunbar Cycles) 1 mile crits, Justin started doing his first
road racing.
Justin, Kelly Keith and Marc Vettori were
all in the C Race with myself. I couldn't hang with the lead pack at first
so I got stuck in the back. Kelly and Justin were leading the race the whole
time so I kept trying to get to the front to tell them to pace themselves
and back off and get set up for the sprint.
Halfway through the race I start feeling O.K.
and worked my way to the front.
With three laps to go I'm up there yelling
at these guys to get off the front but they didn't back off.
We come around on the last lap and Kelly and
Justin and another rider were attacking and I'm setting in the second group
watching the chase not letting them get away too far or helping anyone chase
them down. We get up under the '95 bridge which is about half a lap to the
finish and someone takes off. Justin and Kelly go with him and when they
caught him they slowed down.
This is the same spot that I decided to take
off and they slowed down so quick I came up on them and had to swerve around
them to keep from hitting them. When I went by Justin the look on his face
was like "where are you going?" I ended up winning that race.
The next week we went down there Justin was
telling me he was going to stay on my wheel the whole time. About two laps
into the race there he was at the front again. He still spent too much time
at the front in that race, but finished better.
From the beginning he was the kid who spent
too much time at the front at least now he is strong enough to stay at the
front. |
