Keith Brothers Donate Leaf Blower to Wooden Wheels Team for Trail Maintenance!

Mid Atlantic Cup Cyclo-cross Series #4 Race Report
by
Marc Vettori

Race Weekend November 6, 7 1999

Saturday

Overview:
The Wooden Wheels team traveled to Hughsville, Maryland to compete in the 4th of 9 Mid Atlantic Cup races. The race was the smallest of any cross race I have attended this year, which was surprising considering the number of tough cross riders coming out of DC and Baltimore ( only :45 minutes away). However, I was not one to complain after a week of battling illness, I was excited at the opportunity to try and steal some Mid Atlantic Points. The course was wide open and lent itself to drafting, 4 sets of barriers, a really high triple set, a single on a run up, another single, and a double right before the start finish that lent it self to being bunny hopped. The crowd went nuts anytime anybody hopped them.

A Race
This race was a three-man race at the front with Phil Riggio (Pax Velo), Chris Newell (RPM), and Brent Biddle (First State Velo). For 45 minutes of the hour race I felt Brent really controlled the tempo of this leading group. He battled and looked in control of the race. However, with two laps to go Riggio (2X MD cross state champion) and Newell turned up the heat, as Biddle cracked. Brent had done enough work that he easily cruised in for 3rd. At the front Riggio and Newell battled it out one on one, on the final lap both riders bunny hopped the last double barrier as Riggio made through just a little smoother. Phil sprinted to the win. It should be noted that Dave Mandart (First State Velo) ran a strong race finishing up in 5th place.

Women’s
A field of four battled a closely contested battle that would not be completely decided unit the final minutes of the race. A highly determined Jeanie Rengers (Wooden Wheels) set a blistering pace opening up an early :30 second gap over Zina Newell, Tracy Lea (FUJI), and Nancy Devore. At the end of the second lap Newell was able to catch the leader and passed her on the triple barrier. Zina opened a large gap on the other riders. Lea and Devore worked hard to bridge up to Rengers. On the final lap Devore was able to put both Lea and Rengers away with a strong move at the beginning of the lap. Rengers may have over extended herself early, but fought valiantly through out the race.

B Race
The field was considerable smaller this week with only 10 B riders in the field. However, 3 top 10 ranked riders where there: Tom Synder (First Capital), and Mike Dovin, and Marc Vettori (WW). Early on, a break of five including Snyder, Dovin, and Vettori made a fast but manageable pace. Near the end of the second lap Chuck Dunbar (Bike Doctor) made a strong attack to gap the group. When the group responded, I realized ,as was being spit out the back, that today was not going to be my day. From that point on I was out of contention so I don’t know how it shook down at the front. The top 5 riders were : 1. Chuck Dunbar (Bike Dr.) 2. Mike Dovin (shirks) 3. Chuck Miller (CW) 4. Tom Snyder (ncvc) 5. Marc Vettori (ww). I was very pleased considering my health and that I ripped my cleat out of my shoe mid way through the race. It was ugly but fun. Tim McDaniel also of Wooden Wheels finished up in 8th place.

C Race
Sean Groom (Cappio) and Ted McDaniel Jr. (Wooden Wheels) ran away with this race early. The two kept pushing each other early. Then Sean Groom made a decisive move as Ted went into defensive mode and early hung on for an easy second.

Sunday

Snow Valley Psycocross XVI race #2

B Race
Ted McDaniel Jr. runs past the leader on the final lap to win the race. Ted battled in a tight race with 4 other guys quietly moving up from 5th to take the win late in the race.

Kelly Keith and Tyler Keith went out and purchased a brand new leaf blower for trail maintenance. Kelly a local Expert is also very active in the Delaware Trail Spinners. Tyler a very fast Sport racer (who carries railroad ties with a broken collarbone in the off season) will be getting his collarbone fixed up December 3rd and will be back racing by the end of April. THANK YOU Kelly & Tyler!

The Delaware Trail Spinners with all the usual suspects -
Bill Bowen, Mrs. Bowen, Ken Robinson, Alan Turns, Todd Forrest, Bob Cox, Pete Brakhage, Mark Nickerson, Kelly Keith, Ted McDaniel, Lisa Myerberg & Volunteers from the Sierra Club did an excellent job promoting the 1999 Iron Hill XC mountain bike race at the Iron Hill Park - Newark, DE on Sunday. It was sunny with temperatures in the mid-50s making it
a beautiful day for a mountain bike race. It had rained the day before the race making the course very slick (wet clay and leaves in some areas} and muddy.
      Dave Radziewicz
- Jamis ran what seemed to be a perfect race gapping the number two rider in the Expert/Pro race by eight minutes. This is nothing new to Dave. Last week he had a 16 minute gap on the number two finisher and lapped all but one Sport rider missing him by just 3 minutes. Dave brought the wrong tires to the Iron Hill race anticipating a little dryer conditions. However he seemed to be flying around the course (like a Pro) with or without the proper traction! Dave turned Pro in 1999 and is looking forward to the 2000 racing season. Check out his interview.

Scary Things Happened in New Jersey this Halloween
G. Joannou Cycle-Jamis Bicycles' Jody Geisler and Greg Padley competed in the Mountain Man Biathlon Sunday, October 31, 1999. Billed as the last Mountain Man Biathlon of the millennium, the off road race took place at the Lewis Morris Park in historic Morristown, New Jersey. George Washington and his troops traversed the region over two centuries prior to this particular Halloween day. Watching the limping, bandaged few shuffle across a field post race, many competitors agreed they felt as if they'd survived a battle. The day dawned sunny and unseasonably warm at 65 degrees. At 11 AM the 250 strong field was off and running into the woods for 2.6 miles. Then, twelve miles of mountain biking on a challenging, technical course. Before the finish, another trail run, this one 1.3 miles. Loose rocks and roots, hidden by once colorful fall foliage, caused several sprained ankles and several bicycle crashes. Geisler, aboard her Jamis Durango AL, and Padley, riding like the devil on his Diablo, survived the event unscathed. As described by the promoter, "the competition was tough, the weather was perfect, the band Sluggo sounded great and the post race festivities were scary." Great snacks and a tasty brew from the local pub were self-served. Competitors ranged from nine year old Taylor Kahl of West Milford to 58 year olds Vinnie Conners and Jan Beliveau, to a six foot tall TelleTubbie (spelling?) and an infantry man in camouflage fatigues. Tyler Wren won the race overall in 1:20:43 although Jamis' Padley quietly claimed victory stating that he waited until the race began to turn his watch back an hour to Daylight Savings Time. "Some people turn their clocks back before they go to sleep and others turn their clocks back at 2 AM. I chose to turn mine back at the sound of the gun so, my race finish time was 46 minutes." The first female finisher was Sinead Fitzgibbon. Nearly complete results are available at: mountainmanbiathlon.com

Paul Gassler, Craig Shaffer, & Tyler Keith at Granogue Sat. 11/6/99

Trail Maintenance at GRANOGUE SATURDAY 11/6

November 6, 1999
Granogue Estate

Craig Shaffer (chainsaw ace), Tyler Keith, Paul Gassler and myself cleared a large tree from the singletrack near the pond, raked leaves off the trail (and other debris), cut a second tree higher up near the pond - then took 4 railroad ties (that Craig put into the back of his truck by himself) into the woods to build bridges for more singletrack.
We started off carrying them into the woods with one person on each end. Tyler Keith who has a broken collarbone had no problem with this. After the first two we thought it would be a good idea to carry one railroad tie with 4 people. Next time we'll bring Terry Blanch and put one on each of his shoulders.
Lastly we put two railroad ties over the gully that starts the singletrack along the river after exiting the motocross course. I'll put some treated lumber on top to complete a small bridge to make for easy access. The weather was beautiful and we rode a lap after all of that hard work. Keeping up with Paul was tough.
Next scheduled trail maintenance: Saturday November 20
9:30 to 12:30- Ride at 12:45
.
Call Bill Deputy 598-5371 or meet at the Pond at 9:30.
