INTERVIEWS

Race notes:
While trying to transfer Expert pictures from one of the memory sticks to the computer somehow the memory stick was corrupted and I can see the pictures just fine as long as they are in the camera but cannot get them off the memory stick...... so all of the Expert Awards pictures are "unavailable" along with about 50 Expert pictures. Proper post- race formatting should solve this problem in the future. Sorry.

Excerpt from Aaron Synder's (2nd Place Beg. Junior Men's interview: I'd like to thank Don Morrison for organizing the entire series and I hope it goes on for many more years. Also, If Brett Carper reads this, would you give me an E-mail. I picked up your medal and would like to mail it to you."Aaron's email: GTRider125@aol.com

Chris Eatough and John MacInnis actually were riding that incredibly steep hill thanks to the spectators. Here's a peak at Chris's interview: "The spectators on the steep uphill were having fun and were motivating me to ride the section."....... and from teammate Kristine's interview on the same subject: "Some encouraging spectators at the top of that little bugger of a hill that I, and hopefully everyone else or else I'm embarrassed,walked/crawled/scratched my way up. Cheering always helps!

Now here is a unique excerpt from Brett Carper - 1st Place Beg. Men Junior's interview: Did you have any unusual problems?: Yes, I did. Like I said on my second lap right before you come out of the woods I started throwing up all over everything.!! There is sill a littl bit left on my shifter because I didn't clean my bike yet. ewww hahahaha

Here's part of an interview that shows the good nature of mtn bike competition among Super Series competitors and the elements that make up great racing: Jill Wiest - 3rd Place Beginner Women 35+: Did you have any interesting experiences during your race (exchanges with competitors / spectators)? Yes. Andrea Morris gave me a run for the money. The last three races she was tailing me or I passed her somewhere in the race. She got me today. The entire last lap she stayed fairly close. After we went through the log stump section, I got disoriented and thought I took a wrong turn and slowed up a bit. That's when Andrea got on my tail and didn't let up. She overtook me at the finish and beat me by 9 seconds. My boyfriend said I'm a woosie. It was a great competition.

GUY'S
NESHAMINY

August 25, 2002
by Bill Deputy

Guy's Bicycle Racing Team did a wonderful job organizing a great day of racing at Neshaminy High School / Idlewood Enviornmental Center. The weather was spectacular and the race course fast and challenging. Course conditions were just perfect as the little bit of rain encountered the night before the race was minimal and quite a help at keeping the dust down. Red Bull (one of the sponsors of the Neshaminy race) provided a super-cool inflated start finish banner and podium to liven things up. Thank you Red Bull.

EXPERT

Chris Eatough - TREK/VW/JBL fresh from his 6th place TransAlp victory in Europe with teammate Jeremiah Bishop in the two person team event was kind enough to stop by Neshaminy on the way to defend his 24 Hour SOLO World Championship Title in British Colombia. Chris finished four laps in 1:42:02 in the Expert Men 19-29 race and was first overall. John MacInnis - SOBE/CANNONDALE had a great race dueling with the fastest guys in the east and finishing up a very respectable 2nd place after encountering a flat tire on the first lap. Think about that next time you have a flat during a race. Jason Moore - SHIRK'S BIKES who is consistently in the top 3 this year in Super Series races (with the exception of only one dnf and one 4th place at Hibernia) chalked up another 3rd place. Brandon Ott - Tailwind (the Orange Bullet) finished fourth and Terry Walls - BIKE DOCTOR fifth.

Kristine Oesterling - TREK/VW/JBL has an email address that starts with "ko". That must mean "knock out" - as she consistently delivers the old one, two to her competitors when entering a Super Series race. In the Expert Women 34 &under she took 1st Place and was first place women overall even after clipping a tree in the beginning of the race and in a seperate incident "almost" endoed over one of the logs. The up and coming Caitlyn Tuel - SHIRK'S BIKES took second and Lisa Most - WISSAHICKON third.

The Expert Men 30-34 race saw two "Guy's" take the top two spots. Mike Yozell showed up intending to spectate but at the last minute decided to race borrowing a Cannondale F-3000 from a friend. Mike almost lost it on that first downhill getting used to the bike but certainly smoothed things out finishing up 4 laps in 1:49:48 to take first place. Ransom Weaver - GUY'S BICYCLE came in second, and Brandon Eifrid - GAP/ STRICTLY BICYCLES third.

John Matthews - ST LOUIS CYCLING won the Expert Men 35-39 race with a whopping six and a half minute lead keeping the podium safe from a complete First State Velo Sport sweep. Rick MiHills - FSVS was second at 1:54:28 and teammate Blair Saunders - FSVS 1:56:04 third.

Jay Dodge - GUY'S BICYCLE had a very fast time of 2:00:18 for 4 laps on the "home course" taking first place Expert Men 40-44 with over a four minute lead. David Clark - TEAM HARRISBURG took second and John Keller - SUN & SKI SPORTS third.

Tim Messersmith - FIRST CAPITAL VELO one of the top 50+ Masters in the country continued his dominance of the 45+ Expert Men's field with his usual top spot on the podium. Second place was the VERY fast Kurt Mikeska - WOODEN WHEELS who was just 1:28 back. Third place went to Rich Cordero - GUY'S BICYCLE who deserves special mention in that he was a very big part of the promotion of this race and always busy with Guy's Racing Team duties. He is a great role model for how to promote mtn biking and participate in the sport at the same time.

Brandon Draugelis - UNATTACHED took first place Expert Men Junior a week after competing in the Mt. Snow national. Adam Beattie - FSVS was second and Nick Pedatella - SPECIALIZED third.

The ever consistent Lauri Webber - WOODEN WHEELS took first place 35+ Expert Women and was out front of all the women earlier in the race. Teammate Lyn Shaffer - WOODEN WHEELS came in second after having trouble fixing a flat and actually riding for miles on the flat tire into the finish. Karen Henry - TEAM HARRISBURG had a flat while in front of all other Expert Women. Unfortunately because of the type tire/tube combination she was running she had to cut the course and borrow a whole new wheel. She finished the race regardless but had to call it a DNF.

SPORT

Matt McElroy - JACK'S BROKEN SPOKE was the fastest overall Sport racer of the day clocking in at 1:27:41. Matt raced in the Sport Men 30-34 group. Good thing he was out front of everyone on that challenging downhill - here's a fun excerpt from his interview: "Tony Baldo and Jim Thistle (I think) spurred some loud cheers for their crash right behind me on the steep downhill during the first lap. The dust from that crash blew up under me. Apparently, Tony crashed in that same spot on a later lap-- it must not have hurt bad enough the first time." Mike Keller - TEAM HARRISBURG (alias Slow Boy) brushed off his nickname yet again placing 2nd with Tony Baldo - LBC coming in third.

Lori Wagner - TEAM HARRISBURG 1:50:35 was first overall Sport Women and first 34 &under. She had quite an exciting race being last into the singletrack off the start and crashing three times...... check out this quote from her interview: " I crashed 3 times. The last crash was a pretty good one. I still don't know what I did, but I hit pretty hard. I heard I had tire prints on my back?? Think I was trying to pick up my speed and got sloppy." Gwen Livingston - WOODEN WHEELS 1:51:54 always a consistent racer had a good race placing second and Nicole Sheets - TAILWIND 1:59:25 finished third.

Matt Doyle - WOODEN WHEELS 1:28:08 showed why that team is currently number one in Super Series team rankings. In a mad dash to the finish with just seconds seperating the first, second and third racers he ended up on top of the podium in the Sport Men 19-29 race. Kevin Fryberger - UNATTACHED 1:28:11 was right on Matt's heels in second and Timothy Dickson - UNATTACHED 1:28:18 third. These three gentlemen were also respectively 2nd, 3rd and 4th overall Sport racers.

THANK YOU
DON MORRISON
FOR CREATING THE WILDLY SUCCESSFUL

MID-ATLANTIC SUPER SERIES!

Patrick Kelly - GUY'S BICYCLES 1:31:39 took first place Sport Men 35-39 with Michael Kirk - WOODEN WHEELS 1:33:52 second (here's an excerpt from his interview: Did you have any interesting experiences during your race (exchanges with competitors/spectators)? Just on the last lap going down the first knarly hill with the rocks in the middle. I was (thought) I was going at a decent clip down the hill when some guy on a Trek HT passed me (don't know how he found the room) about 1/4 of the way down and he just was flying. I had to ask the spectators how in the Hell he did that. Unfortunately around the corner and up the climb he was standing next to his bike with a broken chain. Thomas Trott 1:34:44 finished third.

In the Sport Men Junior race Kyle Hammaker - TEAM HARRISBURG continued his winning ways taking first place in 1:32:55. Cid Ismael Jr. - BIKES BY JAKE 1:38:05 was second and Josh Weiser - BIG RING VELO CLUB third.

It was another intense race in the Sport Men 40-44 race as the top three racers were all within seconds of each other. To keep GUY'S from controlling the podium Donald Pagano - YELLOW BREECHES 1:36:31 outsprinted everyone for first place. Less than 4 seconds back was Bill Ambruster - GUY'S BICYCLES. Another promoter/racer that had a great performance while doing so much work to put this race on was Mike Flynn - GUY'S BICYCLES 1:36:49 third across the line just seconds back from first.

The Sport Men 45-49 race was won by Rob Trachtman - ROBAUTOSONIC 1:41:41with Dennis Smith - WOODEN WHEELS 1:43:32 second and Bob Hutton - VALLEY MTN BIKERS 1:43:36 third.

Richard McCurdy - CYCLE FIT 1:40:05 took his third first place in a Super Series race this season in the ever competitive Sport Men 50+ field. John Fuchs - WISSAHICKON 1:42:52 finished a respectable second and Ken Stadden - UNEMPLOYED WEB MASTERS 1:44:10 was third.

Laurie Jenkin - FSVS ran a smooth race and ended up on top of the podium in the Sport Women 35+ race.

BEGINNER

Matt Vahey - DELAWARE CARDIOVASCULAR 45:03 was again the fastest Beginner racer overall and first place in the Beginner Men 30-34. Matt has had a great season chaulking up six Super Series first places! Bill Parmentier - AUTOSONICS 47:22 was second Beginner Men 30-34 and Brad Herrold third.

Sherri Bosley - CYCLE WORKS 57:06 was the fastest Beginner Women of the day plus first place Beginner Women 35+. Here's what helped motivate her (from her interview): "There is a woman towards the end of the race that yells out women rule, she gives you that little extra push!" Andrea Morris - HARRIES RACING 58:47 was second and Jill Weist 58:55 third. All three of these Women were faster than all of the younger 34 &under age group. Older Women Rule!

Matt Christie took first place in the Beginner Men 19-29 completing two laps in 45:18. Kyle Gery - SHIRK'S BIKES 45:37 crossed the line within the same minute taking second place with Jesse Patterson - BIKE SLUTS 46:41finishing third.

Brett Carper 48:53.178 had an exciting race taking the win in style in the Beginner Men Junior race....... here's a quote from his interview: "For the second lap I followed Aaron Snyder, and right as we came out of the woods we both just sprinted to the finish. He rode very well but I somehow managed to just push past him at the end by about a wheel length. It was an awesome finish!!!!" Aaron Snyder - TAILWIND 48:53.403 was less than a second back in second place and Nate Smith - CEDAR BIKES 50:22 was third.
