INTERVIEWS
Race notes:
You would think that El Cajon California was the furthest distance that we would draw a racer from....... however the correct answer would be Kakogawa, Japan. We also had racers from Colorado, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New York, Virginia, and of course our regional area states NJ, PA, DE, MD and Washington DC Jesse Piersol and hubby Steve Duckinfield were kind enough to show up and slop around in the mud so that Jesse - our first member of team mountainbikeRACER.com and official "staff reporter" could write a report for us and then (with Steve) drive straight to Canada where she will be attending a business seminar for her day job. THANK YOU JESSE & STEVE! Paulo Silva - Rufit Coaching went down hard early into his race and ended up with 9 stitches and a broken nose. He has sponsored the Series by helping out Don Morrison with hours and hours of volunteer work. We wish him a quick recovery. The day before the race I was pre-riding the course and working fairly hard up the largest hill on the course. This young women was staying ahead of me without much effort. Her name is Katherine Morgan-Fiser - TEAM JAR and she placed 4th Beginner Junior 12-18 securing TEAM JAR some quality series points. Way to go Katherine!! Park Rangers were not happy to find a couple of
people drinking alcohol in the park. They did issue citations. Due to a higher than expected turnout there were some problems with results and timing....... we'll smooth this out for the next race and remember...... series points are not affected below the top 15 racers. Rachel

Hibernia
Spring Bash Did someone say cross country mountain bike racing was a dying sport? Think again. There was a GREAT turnout for the first Mid-Atlantic Super Series - Hibernia Spring Bash. Don Morrison and Wissahickon Cyclery did a great job with this race and we are proud to be the title sponsor of the series. Don has worked extremely hard in putting together the series and had the even tougher job of promoting the first race (with the support of Wissahickon Cyclery) at an old (they used to run mtn bike races at Hibernia years ago) but to many........a "new" venue. Working with park authorities and local government Don was able to open up the park for mountain bike racing. Don runs a business full time and also races as a Sport 50+ racer. Always a gentlemen and good organizer..... we all owe him a huge "thank you"! It was supposed to just drizzle a bit in the morning..... then become warmer and partly sunny. Didn't happen. It was raining fairly steady in the morning with cold temperatures. We probably lost around 100 racers that didn't like the idea of an early season race in the rain and mud. Tom Harvey of Wooden Wheels bike shop in Newark, De said that at least 4 people came into his shop that had pre-rode the course and decided NOT to race because it was too muddy. Jeremiah Bishop - K2 NEW SUN took home the $400 dollar
1st Place prize for the Senior 1 Pro/Expert Men 19-26 . He proved that
under severe conditions he remains a formidable opponent and a highly
skilled and consistent racer. Andrew Wulfkuhle - Vicious Cycles is the series points leader for Senior 1 Expert Men 19-26 placing 5th against pros and semi-pros. What a performance for a non-pro in a tough field of racers. 7 pro/semi-pros lined up to race today. The biggest upset prize of the day goes to Kristine Oesterling - Team Harrisburg who beat East Coast heavyweight Katie Compton - Trek/VW East Coast Factory Team (check out Katie's interview for what her day was like).......... Kristine had some tough competitors out there........ Wye Mills 2000 winner Christine Clay among them. Kristine doesn't need much time to get her technical skills on her mtn bike back...... the day before the race is when she broke it out for the first time in months. Congratulations Kristine! Selene Yeager - Bicycling Magazine kept Karen Henry - Team Harrisburg at bay winning the Expert Women Vet/Master 30+ with 2 minutes to spare..... well...... 1:59 to be precise. The mud, rain and crowds reminded her of Woodstock and to keep from being bored while waiting for her 1st place prize money......she entered the raffle and won not one but two series jerseys! Out of 20 Expert Men Veteran 35-44 - Scott Henry - Team Harrisburg promoter of our next Super Series Race for Chocolate showed that he is a very fast and powerful rider. He seemed to have plenty of energy before and after the race.......an excellent spokesman for the sport. Gerry Pflug - Guinness Beer/Speedgoat walked away from for Expert Men Senior 11 27-34 crowd. After 1 1/2 laps he took off and was never seen again. I think someone saw him sipping tea and reading a magazine at the finish line with the almost 5 minutes lead time he had acquired. Chris Kuhl - Gettysburg Bicycle won the Expert Men Junior 12-18 hands down. Robert Sauer - Guys Bicycle edged out Mark Nickerson - Wooden Wheels due to the fact that Mr. Nickerson spent too much time trying to make obscene hand gestures to our cameraman. A notable first time "non-junior" Sport racer....... Caitlyn Tuel - Christiana Cycling at 15yrs old won 1st place Senior Sport Women 19-29 by a whopping 24 minutes! Her Dad - Brian Tuel who also helped Don with the hours of preparation in putting together this race finished 2nd place Beginner Veteran Men 35-44

Andrew McDermott - Wooden Wheels proved that even the 50+ crowd can come back from a broken collarbone and catch a first place. He won the Sport Men Master II 50+ race by over 2 minutes. Karen Minor - Wooden Wheels had her competition wishing she would head back to Colorado as she won the Sport Women 30+ with over 2 minutes to spare. Keep your eye on this racer as she is on a big time roll. The Beginners had the worst weather as there was a fair amount of rain and an unfair amount of mud. Look at the over 200 beginner pictures and you will see many smiles - they were having serious fun. Make sure to check out the pictures (especially the Pro/Expert/Sport) going through the muddy sections! A hearty thanks to Don Morrison for organizing this series (what a great idea) and giving us all the opportunity to make mountain bike racing a "growth" sport in this area today and in the future. |

Hey, what's that
sucking sound? Hey, what's that sucking sound? If you raced the Hibernia Spring Bash on April 8, the
answer would be Rain and temperatures in the high 40s made the premier
race of the Fun. The "fun" of that course almost cost Scott
Henry (Expert Vet) his shoe. Lauri Webber (Expert women) decided early on that if
she could overcome The tales of the race vary, but perhaps Paul Douglas
(Sport vet) sized Another Sport vet rider, Patrick Leonard, was the only
person who told All in all? The mud "sucked," but in the words
of Dave Helenski (Sport
